• Frequently Asked Questions

Is equine-assisted learning the same as therapy?

No. Equine-Assisted Learning is an educational and personal-growth program, not a clinical mental health service. We do not diagnose, treat, or bill insurance for mental health conditions. EAL pairs well with therapy you may be doing elsewhere, and we are happy to coordinate with your therapist if you would like.

Do I need any horse experience?

None at all. Most of our participants have never been around horses, and our programs are specifically designed for that. Your Equine Specialist will guide every interaction.

    Will I ride a horse?

In Equine-Assisted Learning, the work is almost always on the ground. In Therapeutic Riding, yes — but readiness is assessed individually and gradually. Nothing happens that you aren't ready for.

    Is it safe?

Horses are large animals, and we take safety seriously. Our team includes certified instructors and equine specialists, our horses are carefully selected and continuously evaluated for program work, and every session includes safety briefings appropriate to the activity. Helmets are required for any mounted work. We carry liability insurance and have all participants sign a release prior to participation.

    What should I wear?

Closed-toe shoes (boots ideal, sturdy sneakers fine), long pants, and weather-appropriate layers. We have the major benefit of a large indoor arena for covered year-round riding, but we often head outdoors if the weather cooperates. Bring water and a hat in summer.

    How long are sessions?

Sessions are typically about 45 minutes. The first session of any program runs longer because we'll show you the facility and complete intake.

How many sessions will I need?

We organize our program in 8-week-long series of sessions to allow patterns to develop. Some participants come for a season; others stay for years. There is no minimum commitment.

Can I bring my own horse?

For program work, no — we use carefully selected program horses. For boarding, yes; please see our Boarding page.

What does it cost? Do you take insurance?

EAL is not a clinical service and is not billable to insurance. Pricing is listed on the Equine-Assisted Learning page.

Are you accessible for participants with mobility differences?

Our facility includes mounting steps, climate-controlled observation room, and indoor arena. We work with participants with a wide range of mobility profiles. If you have specific concerns, please mention them when you reach out and we can talk through what's possible.

I'm a licensed therapist — can I bring my clients here?

Yes. See our Clinical Partnership page for details on how we work with clinicians.
